Zhu Zhu Hamsters: Fun or Danger

December 7, 2009 · Posted in general

Thankfully my girls are too old to be interested in the Zhu Zhu craze.  To be honest if they were younger this would probably be one of those things that I would not be interested in buying.   As a matter of fact I hadn’t even heard of these little guys until my hubby came home talking about the possible danger that could be associated with them.

According to Good Guide:

Antimony was measured at 93 parts per million in the hamster’s fur and at 106 parts per million in its nose. Both readings exceed the allowable level of 60 parts per million, said O’Rourke, an associate professor of environmental science at the University of California,Berkeley.

So what is Antimony?

Antimony is a silvery-white metal that is found in the earth’s crust. Antimony ores are mined and then mixed with other metals to form antimony alloys or combined with oxygen to form antimony oxide.

How can it harm my child?

Breathing high levels for a long time can irritate your eyes and lungs and can cause heart and lung problems, stomach pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach ulcers.

I am thinking after reading everything that it might just be a good thing to leave that little Zhu Zhu at the store instead of having it under your tree Christmas morning.
